Hey,

I am starting to get into keeping larger fish and I'm really caught on how to remove fish from the tank for cleaning. I always used to use a large cup for fear that the net would harm their fins (especially my pleco). Now that it is around 8" and my Water Cow is about 12", I can't use the cup. How does everyone feel about using a net? Or is there a better way I am not aware of?

Well you shouldn't have to take the fish out when doing regular maintenance you should only fully drain the tank if it's really dirty due to irregular water changes. The way I took out all my monsters when upgrading a tank or just transporting for emergencies is by towel. Take a towel and put it in your tank any size towel long enough to fit the fish let the towel get soaked in water and guide the fish into the towel then grasp the fish pulling each end of the towel up so he gets trapped in the middle of the towel kind of like a basket or cradle. Then lift the towel with the fish in between it will look kind of like a taco with the fish inside and remove him from the tank then move the fish to desired location

Personally I use both methods as well, it depends on what species of fish I'm trying to remove or the size of the fish. I've read a member uses a pillow case for his Red tail cat:)lol

For the towel method, do you find that to be a hard task to accomplish with fast fish?

No I lay it out on the bottom of the tank and when i guide it to the side with the towel on it I carefully lift up either side of the towel then again I usually have very trusting fish

I have thought of that, and typically I wouldn't. However, I am about to upgrade tanks and that has been a question I have been pondering as I prepare to upgrade sizes.

Regarding the towel idea... is this a special towel for the purpose? If not and its a color towel you can expect to have residue detergent leaching into the water.

I with others for just leaving the fish in while working..

I wash some with only water no detergent for that purpose when I need the or I buy a new one and wash it with only water never have had a fish die or something

I have been using net for decades now. LFS uses these clear buckets and make it look so easy. i bought one and am now back to using a net. I don't remove fish for cleaning I use it for moving fry.
