After receiving a lot of good advice here in the thread https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/oscar-ok-in-bare-tank.711966/ I wanted to thank the MFKs, particularly Duanes, Rocksor and Tlindsey for their assistance with this fish. So thank you all, and I thought I'd post an update thread on my Oscar.

We've had Felix over 2 years now and he has certainly lived up to the Puppyfish reputation. Except for a brief case of worms and a light case of fluff on his left pectoral, he's been healthy and growing steadily.

He's now over 11", and this summer I bumped him up to a custom built 75g acrylic tank with a custom concealed 20g sump.
20191231_094007.jpg

He's been living alone except for a stray worm or snail, but I did give up the bare bottom business once I got a better sump set up.
20191231_093834.jpg
He now has some gravel and plants, plus foam filters to bite, and a small log he bites chunks off of for amusement.

I've been feeding him a variety of cichlid foods, snails and worms, but lately he won't eat most foods, and subsists on pet store meal worms and Fluval Bug Bites pellets. I was considering raising crayfish to feed him, but that never happened.

On Christmas I gave him a dozen feeder fish, and this was the first time I'd fed him live fish. They were 1~1.25" Dalmatian mollies from my overpopulated 40g grow-out and brackish sump.
20191212_150439_001.jpg

In 5 days he's hunted down and consumed 8 of them and has lost all interest in other food. He's only eaten a few mealworms in 5 days, though they are his favorite food and he usually consumes 50 a week plus some pellets.

At first he was confused. He's never had other fish in his tank since I removed Pepper the Pleco from his tank over a year back. (Too much fighting!)
20191231_093830.jpg
Eventually he figured it out, and although he spit out the first fish caught, he fully consumed the next five.

There are still four Mollies surviving in Felix's tank, and they are hanging out under the filters where it is difficult for him to reach. They have plenty to eat there underneath the filters and so this could be a standoff that continues for quite some time.

Felix looks great.

Thank you!

I hope Felix enjoys the mollies, as there are many more on tap. I think there's only three in his tank now.

He's not hungry, but pretends to be.

Spoiled. ;)

I swear I wonder if your Felix and my Brick are related...going through 'mealworm only' phases. Loves Bug bites too as a treat (sticks his head out of the water while I pack pellets in his maw). Also a rotten puppy that gets head pats and body tickles. And of course swallowing stuff he shouldn't! Even the pattern of his pigmentation is similar. LOL

Felix managed to consume 11 out of 12 mollies and the lone remainder is hiding religiously under the sponge filters where he is virtually invisible.

But one tiny yellow guppy got in there by accident and he has been living in that tank for weeks now.

I decided to add about 20 more.

I have watched Felix watching The Guppy, and they have evidently developed some sort of bond. I don't know what it is but perhaps he thinks the guppy is just a baby oscar and he refuses to eat it.

I considered that he might not be hungry but I gave him a mealworm and he snapped it right up.

Then he continually tries to put himself between me and the Guppies. A gal over on Fishlore told me this was possible, but I really didn't believe it until I saw this with my own eyes.

Felix the Oscar has moved into my 125g tank, finally! This was taken right after he was moved in with the African Cichlids.

He immediately redecorated “his” end of the tank.

The 125 is the largest part of my 3 tank experimental 240g indoor/outdoor cascade system. (I show that in the thread Patio Tanks Rock.)

Felix is dealing with the move pretty well. I wish I had moved him sooner. He is over 13” now and nearing 4 years old.

As it happened, the Africans in the 125 killed Brown Leeloo, a 5”+ Johanni/Zebra, which opened up lots of room in the 125 for Felix, once I moved Butterfish, Jingles the Red Jewel, and Sunflower the yellow Lab, into his old tank.

He is living with Black Leeloo, Blue Leeloo, and Mojo (All Malawi cichlid hybrids.) There’s Dyson the sailfin Pleco, Redeye the albino Bristlenose, and Rhino, the bristle nose.

Black Leeloo lives in Felix’s shadow, and he protects her from Mojo and Blue Leeloo.

There is also an Upside Down Cat (Peter Peachfuzz) one Serpae (The Lone Tetra) plus a small school of Dalmatian Mollies, and a smaller school of Guppies.

There was some aggression from the Africans, but Felix is over 4x heavier, and fears not. Also, he has been living with Butterfish in the 75g for many months, so he had some experience with Africans.

Felix had quit eating the 1” mollies and guppies, completely some months ago. Maybe a big one got stuck in his throat and hurt him. He doesn’t like worms much either anymore, and mostly eats OMEGA One Cichlid pellets.

One end of the tank is right next to my La-Z-Boy, and he hangs out at the end with me.

Hey Ulu Ulu ,
You have a very attractive set up going on there! I love the Oscar. The different views are pretty sweet too. Your mixture of fish is quite unique. I like it because it is set up different than the norm. Nice.
