I can't say I have any experience with these guys. But if the extra visual barriers don't work you might have to separate them. Have you tried adding some live plants to help block their view of each other?
Are they young? They aren't mean per say when young, but nippy. It will pass.
Add more hiding spots. Mine nip at each other once in a while, but haven't seen any lost limbs or anything yet. I have a jar and pot in the tank and some fake plants.
lucky for you axlotls are extremely good at healing. Keep an eye on them both, if they are both still eating and the worst injuries are a few nips on the tail from time to time then you don't have anything to worry about. If it gets worse or if it stresses one to the point that one stops eating then separate them.
it usually passes as they get older however sometimes one can just be mean. as long as they are all growing evenin with each other there is no real harm they can do to each other.
the best part is even if they do lose a limb it will grow back. <even tho i hope it dosnt happen; sometimes there can be a regen issue>
these creatures are amazing and with the soft jaws as long as they cant fit most of another one into theyre mouth i doubt they can kill it
the animals regen powers are crazy. heres a story from when i kept 3 adults. it sounds unbelievable.
a couple years ago i had a power outage and i had to move 12 tanks into 3 tanks that were battery powered for 7 days. during this time one of my axolts took a hard bite to the head from another tank mate sharing the emergency tank. almost the whole frontal structure of the face, including the left eye was missing. after i seperated him he recovered and regrew his face in 2 months. it was insane.
Ya....The male isn't looking the greatest..They are about 3 years old. I just switched them to a bigger tank and they have been together the whole 3 years.
If they are adults and the male is as bad as you say then I would separate them. It couldn't hurt and if you just upgraded them then you should have a spare tank laying around that would work nicely for the male.
Well I thought wrong... The female wasn't beating on him as I see now. It looks like he may have fin rot. I don't know if an axie can get it but he also got a black mouth. Really pisses me off becuz I should have caught it earlier..Had him 3 years. I hope I can get another from the College Biology Department.
did he die? i dont know if axolotls can get fin rot either but its hardly a death sentence if that is what it is just keep the water super clean and it should go away, though im not experienced with these guys at all but thats usually all it takes for a fish to get over it...
