I was wondering, I've had this pair of Convicts for a while now. I setup everything that is necessary to get them into the mating mood as informed by the employee who bagged them for me when i bought them. The employee told me the female was his, but he put it back for on stock, that she spawned before just fine. I think she might be ready just about now.

Some traits shes been showing is that she chases the male alot. She beats him up, but just recently the male started to "man up" Now they just spin in circle like a happy couple.

Another is that shes always hiding in the clay pot i have for her. I have a Jack Dempsey in there also (Male) just temporarily, and everytime it would swim past the pot, the female convict would chase it away. It would expand its gills wide, like trying to intimidate the JD or something.

Is this any possible signs that she may lay soon? Because I recently built a rack for my "fish room" and i was planning on cleaning all of the tanks before i set them up, i dont want to ruin the mood for the Convicts..

Thanks for the help guys! Ask me anything if you need info!

First off cons are egg layers not live bearers.

Everything you are seeing is mating ritual. If she is staying in that pot it will likely be her spawning site. If her color have intensified then she is ready. Feed lots of fatty foods like frozen bloodworms , brine shrimp, glass worms. I usually feed pellets early in the day and the frozen food in the after noon. Do a 25% water change with water a few degrees lower or higher then current tank temp. 3-5 degrees is enough.

I been meaning to reply to this but appearently I have to wait for an admin to approve my post? ...

Yeah sorry i didn't quite explained myself. I used to feed them Omega One Shrimp Pellets, but then i switched to frozen brine shrimp and that's when her colors brightend, her actions changed aswell!

The bright coloration on the belly of the female signifies that breeding is near.............a proper male will be a fish with a healthy hump on its head, called a nucjal hump...........If awsome quality, then the fins would have flowing end tips........Much of todays convict cichlid are hardy because of all the cross breeding within its species.........But sometimes you come across some that carry the natural color tints of where they are from............
