I got the shock of my life tonight, when I checked on my 100g and noticed several dozen fry hovering under my female parrot in the corner!!

She and her mate (my male BP) went through their spawning ritual about a week ago, and defended their eggs with a vengeance, but I assumed they'd all been eaten as usual. Well apparently some other male slipped in there somewhere and fertilized some! The possibilities are:

- male GT
- male zebra con
- male marble con

I suspect it was the zebra con because he's been oversexed since I brought him home. He flirts with everything even other males, but I was shocked to see fry because my BP pair will defend their eggs to the death!

Oh well! I guess I'll find out who the daddy was, if any of the fry survive...

Awesome!!! What a sly dog! I would put money on one of the cons. Are you leaving all the fish in the tank? Or removing some fry?

Is there any reason why the male blood parrot couldn't be the baby daddy? Not all are infertile.

Correct only 99.9% are  I personally have never heard of a fertile male but they have to be out there.

BP are the sex slaves of the fish world and cant keep their fins closed. They breed with anything that can squirt and has fins!

I doubt he was the daddy because I used to house just the two of them in a tank alone, and he would try and try to fertilize eggs as she laid them every 2 weeks. They never hatched, ever. So I'm pretty sure he's not the dad. ;) The funny thing is, he's a wonderful dad right now! He loves them "as if they were his own" lol!

I hate to sound heartless, but I don't have another tank to raise fry and I was just going to keep them with the parents, come what may. I used to raise con fry and it was exhausting for me with the daily water changes and special food. The parrots are doing a great job as parents so far and none of the other fish are bothering them, so I'll just keep them in the 100g and see what happens...
