I have a 2 yo female convict at around 3" in my office, that was always skittish and jumpy whenever someone else entered. A couple of months ago, I added male at 4.5"+ with a much taller boby than the female. There are always some chasing in the tank, but recently the female is terrorizing the male. It's to the point that the male keeps pounding on the glass trying to escape from the female. His body and tail have some damages. And the noise is kind of annoying to hear while I'm sitting here trying to work. Are convict pairs supposed to be rough like this, or is something wrong and I need to separate them?

Thanks!

Thanks. They are in a 10g in my office. The female started clearing out gravels where she usually stays, which never happened before I added the male.

I've noticed that type of behaviour whenever I've tried to house convicts in tanks under 30 gallons, they simply hid and became became very skittish. What size of tank do you have?

*Edit: Just seen your reply 10g, I'd personally try getting a tank with a bigger footprint if possible

They are getting ready to breed. In that size tank it's dangerous for the female to breed in cause the male beat her to death during or after the breeding process

The positive thing is when I have a colleague coming in my office, we start talking about fish fight instead of work :)

I'll keep an eye on them as long as the breeding doesn't occur during weekends when I'm not here. I actually have a divider made for them. I'll also put in a pvc pipe for her hiding spot that the male can't fit, just in case.

In a 10G, you'll end up with a dead female before too long unless you divide them. Long term, a 10G isn't large enough, even for a divided pair IMO.

10g is all I think I should have in my office. I don't plan on raising fry in this tank if that's what you meant as long term. And if need be, I can transfer the fish home.
