My female Dovii is now about 1 1/2 years old and she is still only about 9 inches long. She is growing really slow. I feed her a variety of cichlid sticks and pellets but she is still growing very slow. Do wolf Cichlids grow slow or is it because I am not giving her live foods? She is still laying eggs but I can not find a male for her anywhere in NC.

fish growth depends on a variety of factors.

1- tank size- bigger the better
2- water quality- duh. filtration/matenince
3- feeding- power or other and what your feeding.
4 and biggest if other are mastered- fish genetics, some fish grow like weeds- some very slow.

get all down pat and you'll see growth happen. dovii should grow fairly quickly to around 8-10" than will slow down before hitting max size. 21-24" males. 15"ish females.

Actually, dovii are relatively fast growers. The reason that she is growing "slow" is because she is spending a lot of energy producing eggs. It also depends on your water changes and the tank size she is in. IMO that's pretty good growth for a female.

grammodes are notorious for being slower growers. polomax (great cichlid keeper). grew one 8 inches in one year. he has everything down well- feeding, tank size, and quaity.

I had a female Dovii that was 1 1/2 years old and she was just over 7". Someone posted this before and the general thought was they grow semi slow. I think we get spoiled with catfish growth rates and expect all fish to do the same :D

Where are you in NC? Fintastic in Charlotte had some doviis last time I was down there a month ago.

***EDITED TO ADD***
Also check out this link if you're near Charlotte. It's the sale/trade forum for the local aquarium club.

Do they ever get any good males in? I'm about 3 hours away but for a really good male I might make the trip.

The ones they had when I was there a couple of weeks ago were only about 3". Why not just get one from Jeff Rapps. At least you can be sure to get a male that way.

Thanx 4 the tip. I went to Fintastic in Charlotte NC Tuesday 7/29/08 and purchased a male dovii. He is around 3 inches long. This will be my first time raising a male Dovii. Any advice that you guys can provide that will help me raise my first male Dovii will be greatly appreciated.:D
