I have about a 4 month ol EBJD and I"m going to put her by herself in a 46 gallon bowfront. I'm wondering what other cichlids that are smaller would be compatable. What I was thinking was perhaps a couple angelfish or even a leopard leaf fish. Thanks for advice.

I have 5 cories and a BN pelco in a 40 with my 4" male...Agree with acsfoolmike as keeping the ebjd as top dog. since almost any cichlid will own them...although some rams might do. IMO, fish that stays at the bottom are better than the one that stays on top (ie danios, hatchetfish, etc) hope this help :-)

Barbs? yeah you can expect tattered fins...and how do you know its a female? You said only 4 months old, rarely do you get a female anyways. Lemme know something I don't cuz I can't even sex a regular 1" Jack Dempsey

Leopards should be fine i had 6 with 4 EBJDs and they mostly ignored each other, guessing since they just look so damn different they are peaceful to each other.

The thing is, I really wouldn't put any fish of substantial size in, regardless of temperment, because of the tank size. I have an EBJD in a 30 gal right now but it's only temporary and he/she is alone in there. For the record, mine has a great temperment and is very active and sociable when I come around the tank, so leaving yours alone in there is another option I think you should consider, as these fish make for a great centerpiece anyway.

I was thinking of smaller cichlids and make it a planted tank. perhaps add the 2 Bolivian rams that are with him now in a 25g, along with the 1 angelfish. plus a few dithers such as black neons or serpae tetras. Curently the EBJD is in a 25g with 1 small / med angelfish and 2 bolivian rams plus a couple of black neons. My original plans is to move all from the 25 to the 46. Its pretty heavily planted.

sound fine but she will need a bigger tank when she gets bigger.
