Those of you who do breeding, how do I tell if my male is fertile to breed? I'm thinking of getting a divider and adding a female and give breeding a try. Since my tank is only a 50 gallon I'm debating that it might be too small. Do females get big or can I just divide the tank say 70/30% and give the male a little more than half the tan?

oh yeah your fh is big. I have heard this works well though if you get a much more agressive much smaller female. She will usually let him lay eggs with her because he is so big and strong. In my experience though fh are best to pair up in the same tank with eggcrate divider...to be conditioned together and kept separate as the release hormones in the water to signal their readiness. red dragon females get redder eyes and turn black the males head goes down. When they are ready it is best to put the male into the females area so that she has an advantage. I have never had it work the other way around. Of course this is the issue that would make pairing them so difficult in such a small tank but it can be done. I think all the people that have done it though had more than one fifty gallon tank. You couldn't do it if you had one because you will need to move one of them out at some point.

Look up fh breeding on the internet there is a lot of info out there but most of it is on forums in old discussions and stickies

I have not yet bred fh..but have kept them..and my new male is to young to breed now...but he clearly showing is breeding tube.

Another reason to get a smaller female is so she does not damage or kill your male...females get VERY aggressive during breeding.
