hi just a question about female grammodes - mine has been turning really dark lately, and it's not because she is sick. if anything she is actually becoming more aggressive. she currently lives in my 100 gallon with some clown loaches and a 6 inch male argentea. the female grammodes is around 3-3.5" TL. my large male grammodes is in there too but on the other side of a divider. the female grammodes used to get chased whenever the argentea came out for a swim. but lately i notice she's been defending a small area behind some driftwood and is flaring back at the argentea.

i'm wondering if the darker colors mean anything? the pectoral fins are now constantly black, and essentially she is a dark fish except for the ends of her dorsal and her tail which are normal colored.
is this a sign of dominance, breeding etc?

Mine stayed completely black for almost a week when I first took her from her own 29 gallon and put her in the community growout tank. I assumed it was stress and sure enough she turned back to her usual self again.

i dont think it's stress because she's out and swimming around and she doesn't get into tiffs with the argentea anymore. her eyes are also bright and 'golden'...
ah well, maybe she's in an evil mood mwahahahahahaa :D

Honestly I don't know if stress is why she turned black. She swam with the others and joined the feeding frenzy at feeding time and didn't act stressed. But nonetheless, she was black from head to tail with normal bright eyes and normal personality. And she didn't turn black just sometimes...it was 24/7. I'm not very experienced with Grammodes...maybe someone else has some insight. Has Polomax ever experienced the 'blackness'?

My 3 inch female turns black when she flirts with my 6 inch male. is she doing this close to your divided male?

no the argentea is holed up right next to the divider so she doesn't really get close.
i think she knows he is there... maybe that's why she is dark all the time.
