Ok, i have a genetic question for some of you guys, one turn off, to these fish is the lack of color on the females, since usually you keep multiple females with one male, now my question is, is it possible to line breed better looking females and if so, is anyone working on this.

I am sure that you can improve certain finnage, etc through generations of line breeding, but be careful of inbreeding. Haps are susceptible to genetic weakness (deformities, etc.) but sure, you can do this. But body color will always be overall the same.

Yes, it is. But it is hard and long. I just recently saw a German Red, that I could have sworn was a male, but in fact it was a female.

Personally my problem with breeding these fish is that you can't do many. IE you have to give them there own tank since you really can't tell the female apart.

I will try to find a link to 1 where they show a female like the 1 I saw. (Of course the owner wouldn't even consider me buying it.)

Here is the female:

And yes it really is a female

i just thought since, in some haps like the nimbochromis fusco, the female carry some color that if you worked on it you could improve it, i got another question for you and who ever else wants to answer, do you think breeding for color is ok, or should we try to stay as close to the wild look as posible, i myself don't see a problem with it.

OK, so I personally feel we need both... IE I love all the colors you get from the fryeri now. (IE the OB, the iceberg, etc).

I mean if we wanted to we could get these guys to look like discus. You have seen what wild ones look like...

Now that being said I also think we need to make sure we don't just interbreed too much, ie we do need to have people keeping closest to the wild...

So that said, we are already selectively breeding. And in some cases too much already. (I even have some Albino's that have odd shaped mouths because of being too inbred, people go for the quick route which is done by inbreeding.)

Is that the popular belief... No. IE everyone crys no hybrid. (I cry no selling hybrids unless owner if fully aware). To be honest even with our breeding we always pick the nicest male for breeding. How do we know that he has the right genes that in nature he would survive?

And just FYI there are actual a decent amount of female haps with some color. It is the peacocks that are just brown usually.

yep, i know what you mean, alot of eye biters i see know have bent nose's, im not a fan of hybreds , but i belive line breeding isn't a problem

thanks 4 the link, but my work comp, won't let me check it out, so im going to have to wait to see it.

it would take many generations before your happy

I have a Aul. Rubyscenes that you swear would be a sub-dom. male. She is 2 generaation line bred out of Randy Tucker's old bright red male. And needless to say she throws the best color out of all 7 of my females. She even tops old armke's females and they were incredible color producers. Enough said about hybrids I hate it (my opinion). As you can see on my website I stick to what comes from the lake other than your popular aquarium strains.
