I have a female jack dempsey that is tankmates with a male jd and a texas cichlid. She has always been very light/pale in color. The last couple of days she has turned dark with vibrante colors in her gill plates and on fins. I dont see too much mating signs with male infact they r not around each other too much. When the lights r turned on in morning I notice them together frequently but through the day they really are not seem together. I have notice though it does seem that they are moving sand i different several different spots in tank almost like making nests? Any ideas?

How big are they? Mine is trying to breed now and it spends a great deal of time digging pits and its a much darker color. As far as I know yours might be setting up to breed.

My female JD of the same size has been showing the exact same signs for the past couple of weeks. It started when I added my small female con to the tank with the JD and a GT, so I assumed it might be because there was a fish in the tank now that ranked below her and it was a dominance thing.

This might be the case because the Con has been digging pits around the tank as well as though she's getting ready to lay eggs and has been flaring at the JD more recently. Interesting to note that I noticed the Dempsey's colors got a bit lighter again as of this morning.

Have you changed anything in your tank right before this began happening? If you figure out anything, keep us posted, because I'm curious as well as to why this is happening to our Dempseys (be it mating, dominance, stress, etc.)

well i have started feeding them beefheart a couple of weeks ago and added a texas cichlid which is smaller but she has not showed any aggression towards it nor pays any attention to it!

How can you tell about the colors and darkness of fish without any pics? The only reason is we'd all love to see it.

Its like saying I just got a brand new Lamborghini and its got awesome colors, WOW! You've all got to see it....and no pics for it

Sounds like they are getting ready to spawn. If they rub together that is a sign of spawning, so is digging pits or going in a cave staying close and fending off any other fish.
