I'm currently experiencing some problems with a female motoro, and was hoping that maybe some of the keepers here have encountered any similar problems in the past. I have four rays (2 hystrix, 2 motoro) and recently the female motoro has started to act as if she is sick. She has stopped eating, is not as active as the other rays, and it seems as if her eyes are filled with some sort of fluid (orange in colour). All of the other rays are completely normal, as well as the other fish in the tank, so, I'm wondering if anyone has encountered anything like this before. I've raised the temperature up, and started a salt treatment regiment in the meantime. All the parameters are: GH: 120 (always been 120) KH: 0 pH: 6.5 NO2:0 NO3: 40 if anyone has any suggestions, that would be great. Thanks

I've never come across anything like that. Maybe a pic would help. Wc or captive?

It could be bacterial. I have had blood filled eyes on rays I have got shipped in before. It could be something along those lines.

Possibly bacterial, but I had a very similar problem with my male mantilla. Turned out there was chloramine in my water supply (approx. 1-2ppm of ammonia straight from the tap). Might be a good idea to test your water source.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. I'll check the source from the tap, but I treat with Prime, which allegedly removes the chloramine. Maybe I'll up the dose. As far as parasites, or bacterial infection, what are suitable treatments for rays? I feed them a combination of earthworms (farmed) and various whitefish (tilapia, basa, pollock), so maybe they got an infection from the food. I should also add, that she's starting having "fits" or "spasms", where she starts frantically darting all over the tank, similar to a bucking bull on a rampage. This started yesterday, and she's done it twice so far. She calms down afterwards, but still seems like unhealthy behavior. So ya, if anyone can suggest some safe bacterial treatments, that would be great. P.S. I can't separate my paragraphs in the posts (enter does nothing), so forgive the "run on" sentences. lol. If anyone knows how I can change this setting, that would be great. Thanks again for all the help and advice

Ok, to update everyone, after the advice that it may be bacterial, i took a closer look and noticed that she has a fungal buildup on her barbs, so, I'm guessing that a bacterial infection, followed by a secondary fungal infection are the culprit. I've started to treat with melafix alongside my salt/water change regime, and things seemed to be doing better, but tonight she seems to be taking a turn for the worse. I'm seeing signs of "death curl" (which I've had happen before, but not this severely, and they pulled through perfectly), and seem to be running out of options. I've read over the list of medications that safe for rays, and that's where I got the idea to use melafix, but, I'm wondering, is pimafix safe for the fungal treatment? I noticed it wasn't in the list. I'd like to use them in junction with each other and hopefully get her through this. If anyone has any other suggestions or advice, that would be great... thanks again for everything

I have used melafix and pimafix for many years and used it to treat my rays more then once... it more inhibits it so the animals immune system can overcome it.. idk if your ray needs something stronger... But I do not increase temps or add salt when using these treatments as they will cause negative sides effects... I also start my treatments 50/50 of each running at 1/4 the suggested dose.. and doseing 1/4 the next 3 days building it up to a full dose ( no water changes or carbon run during that time) and then treating the tank w/ the 1/4 50/50 dose of each after each 50% water change done afterwards until the fish is back to normal ( approx. every 3-5 days)

Ok. Thanks guys. Just wanted to know if the pimafix was safe to use. She seems to be recovering since going upside down the other night. I figure I'll finish out the melafix regiment (on day 4 now), then start the pimafix. Thoughts?...thanks again for the help everyone

Ok. So, this morning, when I looked into the tank, she was belly up again, still breathing though. I flipped her over, and noticed that her eyes are COMPLETELY clouded over now. Is this maybe a reaction to the melafix/pimafix treatment? I'm also wondering if this "damage" is going to be reversible? Any thoughts?
