Here is a picture on one A breeder tanks. The male is 3 times the size of our female, and the PVC pipes offer a great retreat. However, I have experienced with PVC retreat, the female is now residing in the retreat longer than usual. As a result, male and female courtship has decreased. I'm thinking about removing the retreat until she is holding eggs...right now I coax her out every now and than.
I found, with mouth brooders, a terracotta pot with a diameter the same length as the male is essential for fertilization. I noticed this after my F1 Oreochromis mossombica female deposits the eggs in the pot, and the male soods up vertically when fertilizing the eggs

O. mossambica would spawn if they had nothing in the tank, granted the female was willing. A male would pick a spot in the tank he wanted to spawn in, clean it, guard it and attract viable females to it. Unwilling females are killed if they cannot escape a zealous male, which might be why your female is hiding more than usual.
If you really want to watch some more natural behavior add sand to the tank and watch your male construct himself a huge pit. I've had males as small as 1.5" color up like adult males and construct pits 3" in diameter.
Females are also often stunted in comparison to the growth of the male from spawning. It is not common that I find my females without a mouthful of eggs and they do not get to eat. I have two females currently and they are half the size of the male. It is good that you are keeping the sexes separate for now. O mossambicus is one of my favorite cichlids. Get some pics of your male!
