female UMBEE?

my umbee growout is around 4.5" now and has become alot more colourful in the last few weeks. so colourful i even started questioning it's sex. as i've never owned or raised an umbee before, i am really starting to like this fish and is becoming my favourite fish, even more than dovii.

i'm getting 4 more growouts next week being sent over from the east so i'm really hoping to get a male. if i do, then i think i'll be scrapping the dovii's from my 250g and putting the umbee in there.

here's a few pics from tonight. they are without the flash so you can see the colours i'm seeing let me know what you think on the sex.

Looks like you goy urself a male there. Females will have alot of black in their dorsal and pelvic fins.

thats a real nice looking umbee im no expert on them but i would guess that was male

Nice! I would say male. I got a couple of umbees from
Ken I hope I get a male to.

I'm still going with female. My male had much more pointy dorsal and anal fins at that size and a more streamlined head and body. Though the fish is still small, and the best anyone can give you from a photo is an educated guess. Vent it.

After seeing these pics I'm having second thoughts on mine.What I believed to be a male may not be now. lol! I'm no expert either but mine(what I think to be male) has longer more pointed dorsal/anal fins as Modest Man said. Have you tried the mirror trick? Tried it yesterday and didn't get any color change or reaction out of mine. Either way that is one nice Umbee Cuban.Mike

the reason it's so colourful at the moment is because i had to devide the 6' tank it's in. there is a female jag opposite the umbee and they've been going nuts at each other ever since. if this is the umbees aggressive/ dominant colours, wouldn't its pelvic and dorsal fins be black.

MM - i'll vent it(take a photo ) next week when i put my new umbees in. i don't really like taking fish out and stressing them without a really good reason
