Me and a buddy ordered a group of umbees and I ordered 3 Beani from gauge Brady from cichlid connection back in February. They came in around an inch long a piece and are now hitting the 3 inch mark and starting to color up.

They are being housed in a 150 gallon right now just to grow up in but are getting split up to a 130, a 125 and a 215 gallon pretty soon here.

But my main question is has anyone ever heard of an Umbee and Beani pairing up? I mean, there is 9 umbees and 3 Beani in the tank...plenty to pair up with their own species.. But the umbee (which is female...strong olive color with black dot on her side and occasionally her face will go jet black) and the biggest of my male Beani, have shown a strong liking in each other. They dance, flare at each other, even feed each other. Which is one thing I've never seen happen before.

The weird thing is that it happened after I removed a large growth of the umbees tail. It looked like some sort of tumor. Purple and white in color. I didn't think much of it at first, I figured it was from stress due to an aggressive zonatum in the tank.

Well I got rid of the so arum and the growth grew larger, so I decided to take a scalpel and cut it off her tail (knowing the small part I cut off would grow back). But literally right after I threw her back in the tank from her surgery, the Beani started chasing off anything that came around her. And that's where we are now.

The Beani gets WICKED coloration around her. Nice gold honeycomb with green and blue tinge to it and black sort of bars.

I'm not a huge fan of hybrids. I mean they are cool and whatnot... But should I keep them together since it will be a natural pair instead of something forced? Or should I split them up when I split the rest of the fish up?

I'd let them because this would be a crazy combo :D! but a really think the beani will act differently once u start to remove his buddies

it honestly seems like he wants nothing to do with the others beani in the tank.
he chases the other male away, and the female is growing super slow. she is maybe 1.75 inch, so he doesnt show much interest.

their are some male umbees in the tank that are larger than the beani, but he chases them away from the female umbee. thats partially the reason i need to separate them soon. its only a matter of time before they start picking each other off, and with the touchyness of these fish, i dont wanna stress them out too bad.

the good thing is, nothing touches my clown loaches or goldy pleco!!:D

it would be an awesome combo if they do end up breeding. i havent been able to find anything on the internet of anyone trying that combination

They look great. Espically the beani. Beautiful specimen. Good luck with the beani. I've lost many to bloat!

thanks man,
i keep trying to get some good pictures of the other umbees and beani, but they like to stay in the woodwork more than they come out in the open.

Those fish will become monsters. They look good and they will comeout in the open in time.

that would be a tight hybrid man!!! if you do get fry make sure to save a few and grow em out just to see what they look like!
