I've got a small Amazon sword and some Java ferns in my tank. I've got a good, bright light and the Java ferns are doing pretty well as far as dropped plantlets from old leaves but they haven't really branched out their rhizomes. The sword, which used to be big and beautiful, had to go through a heavy trimming last fall due to the death of the aquarium light and my lack of time to get a new one. Its leaves are bright green and healthy-looking, but the thing has stayed at about three inches tall for the past eight or nine months.

So I was thinking of using some kind of aquarium fertilizer, but I don't want to go around adding things to my tank that will harm my fish (Jack Dempsey, two convicts, and a pictus cat).

I don't know much about aquarium fertilizers...any suggestions?

For a heavy root feeder like a sword you should use some kind of root tab. Seachem makes root tabs but are a little high priced for what you get. If you want to use them then that is fine. I know it was said to stay away form ferts for house plants and in most cases thats true but I use Jobes spikes that are made for " Beautiful house plants", "Palms and Ferns" or they make one for "Aquatic Plants" if you can find them. The first one is usually the most comon. Just make sure you put them in the substrate as deep as possable and that they stay covered and you will have no problems. I can find a 50 pack for a buck or 2.

I use dry ferts exclusively. Liquid ones available in the open market are too weak. I go through Gregwatson.com. Really good ferts, amazing prices.
