The festae looks female. The melanura is hard to tell, but it looks like the forehead is starting to take a sloping shape. Once the fish gets bigger you will know for sure. Nice fish btw.

With sloping meaning more male or female?

Two other questions..
how can u tell it’s a melanura as opposed to Synspilum? Based of coloration?

Also, I’ve been told males only have green eyes? Any truth to that ?

They are the same species. Melanura is just the most up to date name. This was found by testing DNA.

Some say blue eyes means male. But body shape is the most reliable way.

Thanks for your reply. My initial confusion had to do with the syns bright coloration which l thought meant male but lack of nuchal hump or green/blue eyes made me think otherwise. Time should tell

So the festae is 3.5 inches and still hard to tell. Any thoughts? If female, I heard they start coloring up around 4 inches?

The synspilum has yellow blue eyes so I’m thinking more female than male.

Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts
