Is inbreeding a bad idea with fish?

Is 20 a good number of festae fry to get at least one pair (male female)?

Is 125g tank good for 2 full grown festae parents?

I have seen snakes unbreed and get 2 headed deformations from there babys. And I know dogs will not have a full lotter of pups or may have pups with physical issues if they are inbreed. Thats why I ask about fish inbreeding.

Im thinking about adding more festae fry to the 20 I currently have just to make sure I get a pair. I read somewhere that the best way to get a breeding pair is to get a large batch of babys and see who pairs up. So right now I have 20. Would another 5-20 more be needed. Or is my current 20 enough?

As for my tank question. I want my festae to grow healthy and happy. I know larger is always better. But does anyone know if 125g is enough or should I try and replace all my 125g tanks with a larger tank foot print. Like 72 x 24 x 24. I love the 2 foot depths (f to b) but like how 18" dont take up so much floor space in our home. But I would hate to be that dude that keeps a oscar fish in a 20g tall tank. Its not fare to the fish.

I think 20 gives you pretty good odds for more than just one pair. As far as inbreeding goes, I definitely don't prefer it but as long as it doesn't go on for multiple generations and the problematic fry are culled it shouldn't be much of an issue. :-)

20 is more than enough. You'll probably get more than 1 pair with that number. As for tank size I think 125 is good for a pair. It would be better if you would get 2 different batches of fry; let's say 10 males from pair A and 10 females from pair B. It gives you a better chance of getting fry without any problems/deformities.

Thats my goal. But im really trying not to spend $100+ on a nother batch of festay babys. I got lucky and found a cool local guy that had f1 fry for sell and he really hooked me up with this batch of 20. I do have one dude that has a real high center back and another baby festae that is like a "neon tetra" runt. I have another 125g I can dedicate to them if I did get more festae babys.

I dont want to keep them cramped. Thats why I asked about tank size one more time. I know as they grow they will start fighting. So I have deviders ready. I am not no "fish horder" so when I do get my pair of brother or sister, and/or getting a pair from my currents and another batch. Chances are ill save them by selling them for $1 each or just posting a craigslist add for free fish. Which is the other reason I really dont want to spend $100+. LOL I like to try and give oir fish the best homes I can.

Thnks for the reply

I know all fish would rather have 400 gallons over my 125g tanks LOL
