I have what I believe is a female festae, about 4-5 inches now. Whenever I watch the tank from around the corner and the fish can't see me she shows some dark vertical striping and it looks good. But when I come up closer to the tank and she notices me she changes her color and the black bars mostly disappear. But she is not shy at all. I was wondering if it is normal to hide the coloring for her whole life or is it because she is not an adult yet that she hides her coloring?

mine did that for a while till her colors really came out. I think as she starts to mature or get bigger the colors will stay more prominent unless stressed or scared..

could be but then i would think she would show faded colors all the time not just when she sees you... when you feed does she come right up to the front of the tank? or when she does this fading is she moving away from you or is she still coming to the front? but what fish are in with her, could be factor if she is being picked on though theyd have to be much larger to phase a little festae LOL, but yeah its most likely something she will grow out of if its not one of the tankmates messing with her

Both of my females did that for like 2 months then I walked up to feed them yesterday and well let look at the pic she let me take.

Sorry its a bad pic its my phones camera. I was scared if I left to get the cam I would miss the chance. But she got over it I think. The other still does it though I think they just grow out of it.

When I come up to the tank to feed her she fades her color but does not hide at all. She is the one waiting for the food to hit the water.
She is in the tank with 2 jack dempseys, a common pleco, and a polystigma. She is also the largest in the tank.
From what i've been hearing from everyone I think it is just something that she will grow out of and that is good to hear.

yeah if thats her tankmates and she comes to front tank than its def something she should grow out of
GOOD LUCK i cant wait for mine to get as colorful as yours (they are still tiny fry lol)
