festae colors

It depends mostly n the indvidual fish. I've raised and bred them since 1978 and though some can take on coloring at 4", there ar others that don't display their brilliant maturity colors until 6-9 inces. I've had some reach 10 inches before coloring up. Tankmates, compatible breeding prospects, diet, and environment contribute greatly to when they strat taking on color.

Here's one of my females in a solo 55g. She's not liking my daughter too much :). Most seem to color up at around 4" as mentioned above.

My brother's F1 festae fry that he got from John Rambo a while back are at about an inch and a half and some of them are red already! Their entire body is red its crazy how fast these little guys colored up. I'm sure the color and intensity of the color will progress with the age/size.

nice pics

at what size can you start to tell females from males?

Around 4 " you should start to see the female blotch coming in. Also, males keep their spangling on the fins and body. The females will start to lose the spangling especially on the fins starting around 4".

Mine are 4-5 inches and I can tell the difference form my male and females, but there is no red on the body yet. Fins and tails are beautiful I can't wait till the body colors up!

This is my female at 2" (the one on the right) and again about 4.5" that I got from Rapps.

They were easily sexable at a very small size and fully colored by 4".
