Ive had my festae for quite some time now and shes about 5inches or so. i know she is a female because she has layed eggs multiple times, thats not my concern. i figure she is of the size where she should have some nice black barring along her sides but she doesnt have any! she has a lovely golden colour along her sides minus all barring. her dorsal and pectoral fins are jet black when she is fired up but still no bars. is it because she is a low grade festae?? everything else about her is spot on. shes a fine specimen apart from this. Any festae experts got any advice?

you sure its a female thats sounds more like a male. pics would help alot also kind of hard to help with out actually seeing it.

dude i said - She has layed eggs, ive seen her organs, the lot haha. camera is out of action. zero blue spangling anywhere on her body it is definately not a male. im sorry because i know pics are kind of necessary. ill try to upload a pic with my iphone but thats all i can do

Been fascinated with festae for over 30 years now. Even with the eggs, like doomiedee said, a picture can tell a lot. My mentor Ginny Eckstein who got me into cichlids hardcore had a C. Spectabile that laid and fertilized it's own eggs! Not kidding and I'm sure you can google about "Tootsie" and find out more. There are some beautiful females out there with a lack of barring, but if anything they have looked even more orangy/red to me. Golden color or as they put it down under colour is a new one on me. Eager to see the picture even if just from the iPhone.

G'day mate!

iphone pics are better then no pics. if that festae forever person is who i think it is then they know what their talking about cause ive might have learned a few things from them about festaes. maybe it could be a aloner thing she not showing bars cause there is no male to impress estae might want a boyfriend.

Fish are certainly variable. Festae are no exception. My male bars up when they are protecting eggs or babies (like right now), but I don't think I've seen a male quite as handsomely barred up as the one in doomiedee's avatar. While not as bright as the female (typical), he's every bit as barred there.

I found my avatar on Google pics that's got to be the nicest males I've ever seen. I do agree with festae forever all fish vary.
