Wow! That's a huge difference in size. Did you get them from different batch and time? How old and big is the male and female.

I got the male back in April of 2012. He was about 3-4 inches. So I'd probably say he was a few months old already. He's about 11-12 inches TL now and I've had him a year and 3 months. The female I received from a fellow MFK this April, so I've had her 3 months. I have no idea what her age is, but I could probably ask. She's maybe 6 inches TL (half his length but he's much taller and thicker).

Your are right. A fish twice in length is not twice as massive, but more like 3 to 4 times more massive.

So there is huge sexual dimorphism in festae, not just in color, but also in size. The male and female look like belonging to a difference species.

I am wondering if the huge size difference between sex is normal for festae. What is the biggest female festae have you seen?

I think males get to 16 inches and females at about 12. I don't recall whose female festae is the largest.

Here are pics of Mo's festas, http://www.aquamojo.com/?p=1100

From the scale of the pics, Mo's female cannot be more than 8 inch if the male is 16 inch. The size difference between festae sex appear to be huge, which reminds me of African calvus/compressisep species of which males are typically 2 to 3 times the size of females. The trick to breed calvus/compressisep is to provide a shell big enough just for the female to keep out the male, which can still fertilize the eggs from outside. I guess you can do the same thing with festas by providing a flower pot with hole just big enough for the female.

Great looking Festae, check out pics of my Festaes here: www.FaceBook.com/FestaeFactory

Megan is a solid 11" now:
