Hi Everyone,

I am trying to grow out a pair of festae and currently have 5 4-5" inch festae. The largest of which is definitely a female. i would also guess that the second largest is a female and the smallest seems to be the best bet at a male.

The larger female is pretty dominant, but not overly aggressive or violent. I do not want her to slow the growth of everyone else or just significantly out grow the potential male. Do you think I should separate the group? Or just leave them for a while?

Depends on the tank, but if you remove her now there is a chance that she will get overly agressive, and un friendly making it impossible to reintroduce a male to her at a later date. I personally would just over feed such taht all the fish get enough food, and wait untill two pair up before removing any.

Separate the fish into different tanks. Stress from an aggressive fish can slow down the growth of the other fish.

I had half dozen Vieja bifasciatum growing out, the largest were the females, and they would always out compete the 1 male for food, and he remined half their size until I put him in his own tank, fed regular amounts, and did lots of water changes. He caught up and surpassed the females in just a couple months.

They are in a 125 currently… The feedback I have seen is really leaving me torn. I was thinking about removing the smaller fish and beefing them up for a few months and then reintroducing them
