I just got a couple Festae yesterday and I know one is male because he has a lot of spangles with no bars. He has that green sheen on his face, and just looks like a male from all the pictures i've seen of other Festae. He colored up tremendously over the night, I was really surprised when I got up and seen him. The other one though is a bit smaller with less spangles on the tail, and shows their bars quite often, usually when the male goes by it. I do notice a bit of a green sheen on this ones face though, and I do know that the females are usually more colorful so I'm not sure. The bigger male kind of goes up and does the tail slap thing and the other one does it back too, but every now and then he gets just a tad bit too aggressive and takes a little nip at the side of the her/him. Overall, they do very well with each other and swim together a lot. So what do you guys think, male or female on the barred one?

How big are they? I've found the black in the front part of the dorsal fin is the best indication of female [other than venting of course]. I think if you had a male and female then instead of having a dominant and submissive like you do in the video they'd be behaving more like a pair.

Can you get a couple more pics of the barred one it all most looks like a false festae or a Mayan/Uro cichlid

Your right on the other one though its a male

Theyre both festae 100% and they both look male to me... could be wrong on the smaller one since its still small and can always fool you, but i still think its a male

Both fish are 4 inches and I'm thinking its a male too. I'll post a couple more pics when I get home later. As for it being a Mayan, I know both are definitely not, although I have 3 smaller Mayans in the same tank LOL. The guy I bought these off of gave me a really good deal on them and he showed me a female that he said was beating up on these 2 I had LOL, she was already like twice their size. She had the bars with a deep red coloration, this one I got hasn't showed its color yet at all except for a little bit of a green sheen, which is why I think its a male too.

Ima say female just for sheer gl!
