I have 3 festae left from the sale, I thought they were all male until I saw another person post a pic of a similar rt that everyone thought was a female. Now I'm not so sure. That black blotch is there then its gone. I need to decide so I can pass up a wild female or buy her. depends on what I have. do females have the entire front dorsal fin black or do they just need that spot in the middle? Can males have that middle spot as well? please help
the 3 middle pics are of the same fish, 3 different fish total

Super-sorry for the derail, and also not helping you on your question, but isnt it shocking how when young, they resemble Jewel Cichlids?

And on the WC female, youd be nuts not to grab it,then sell off whatever males dont suit you/her.

They need to have the whole front 1/3rd of the dorsal black for it to be female.

Don't mean to derail but: Crap.......... I just bought a second female myself! Good luck on finding a pair, I say buy that female!

I fail to see the resemblance.

Also, get the WC female! Do it! they are NICE!

Now that I bought the wild festae, my male is showing black on the first 1/3 of the dorsal fin (earlier defined as female characteristic). confusing!

Holy S@#$...... you and I can practically share the same thread! Mine did the same thing! What I thought was a male now has the 1/3 black dorsal also...... except has a not as red body and speckels all over it's tail So CONFUSING!

Maybe that it is actually a female or could just be that it is showing it's breeding colors
