I bought this 1.5 inch fish from my lfs, and label a red terror. I asked at the time if it was a true red terror. They seemed clueless, and didn't even know there was such a thing as a "false" one. haha So, I looked it over and thought I counted nine bars....and the upper spot on the tail. But now....as I look closer...the upper spot on the tail seems to be lower than I thought. And can I really see the Y or 4 shape by the eyes?
So...now I'm not sure. Can anyone help with the true identity? Thanks in advance!:)

yup, looks like you got yourself a nice little festae there :) GOOD LUCK they are great fish, spend as much time close to the front of the tank as possible to avoid him becoming shy like they are prone to

You have a festae. In the 2nd pic,The eye spot is in the top half of the tail. It looks like it is just part of the barring that is making it look like it is down lower.
right on

I agree with the others it's a Festae. Also would like to add that it's always better policy to ask for fish by their scientific names. Saying "Is it a Festae" would clear up confusion of whether it's a true or false red terror (which are common names). But it sounds like the lfs you went to might not have had a clue still.

Yes, Festae 100% future monster. Good luck with it.

Yes Festae. Besides having the tail spot above the midpoint of the tail, you can tell it's a festae by the "Y" or "4" pattern it makes on the vertical strips right behind the head. Good luck growing this one...they are beautiful fish.
