Festae Pair in the making?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You have a nice tank. I love the background. I have a group of young Festae too. I feed them New Life Spectrum 2mm twice daily. I also feed them fresh market shrimp, Brine and Ghost Shrimp on occasion. I believe weekly water changes dramatically helps with their growth and health. I did lose one Festae this morning from a fight during the night. This could also be the reason why you lost two of your own. I've learned from keeping Festae in the past that this sort of thing can happen without warning. You will notice your Festae chasing each other around a bit if you have a group. Having two without any other tankmates will sometimes cause one of them to take a lot of aggression from the dominant Festae. Having a group helps spread the aggression and improves the chance of getting a pair. If things get to rough for the sub-dominant Festae, adding a group of fast and robust fish like some species of barbs or tetras could help spread the aggression. There are some members here that have far more experience with Festae than I do (ex: Balton, Mel O, Freshwater Predators) and can offer you more helpful advice and tips. Just search the forums and read some of their threads. Good luck with your Festae!

Thanks for the feed back , I know the video was a little blurree from the leds reflecting off the back ground. Could any one tell if these two might be male/ female? Also have deciated this 90 gallon for them for the mean time. Is that worth tieing up the tank for success of rasing them without tank mates?or might I add some other grow out fish.

thanks

Hard to tell, but I believe they both are female due to coloring. I have a group of them myself at the moment raised in exact same conditions from birth. Males are larger and less colorful then that, my females look exactly like those.

Thanks for the comments, time will tell I guess in the long run. Just seeing them swimning & circling around together makes me think maybe male/ female.

thanks

I'm no expert but i believe it's almost impossible to sex Festae until they are around 4-5".

I have 5 that i'm growing out at the moment, and they change daily.
