About 2 weeks ago my pair of festae were very closing to spawning. They were flirting like crazy and the female was fully displaying her oviposter, and it appeared to have eggs coming out at one point.

But for some reason they completly backed off, and now barely seem interested in each other.

What gives??

My local LFS actually has a "wild" female festae that is about the same size as my current festae. Should I get her? she is $100 though, so I would want to make sure she will either get them to spawn or become the primary female.

Has anyone had cichlids close to breeding and then backing off out of nowhere?

Just give them a little more time, lots of cichlids do false starts and practice runs the first time around. In a couple of weeks it should start up again.
What are you feeding? could you list some tank parameters? water temps and ph. sometimes a shift in these can either trigger or shut down a spawn.
