I bought for myself, 8 young festae to grow out and pair off almost 12 months ago, they have started to pair off, but when I move the pairs to their own seperate tanks with only each other, the male turns on the female and almost kills them, I have had to remove the females from the tanks to save them. This is my first time I owning festae, is there something I am doing wrong, or something else I should be doing?

Someone might know better then me but me personally i would take out every other fish from the tank instead of the pair... So the pair can be in the tank tgat they paired off in...... Not a pro on this just my thought....

Festae are definitely a tough cichlid to keep, none the less pair and spawn. IME, you need to have dithers on hand at all times. I leave the dithers for pairing and until they spawn. Once the fry hatch your ok to move or divide the dithers. If the fry don't hatch then the dithers will help the males aggression or you may still have to divide the males. I have had lots of festae in the past and I have 4 pairs right now. I still haven't had a pair bond for life, usually I have to divide them from time to time in between spawns. But if you truly love them then you'll enjoy them regardless of it being a pain in the butt lol

I searched for so long to find these fish, I reasearched them long and hard before I got them, but nothing you ever read prepares you for the real thing I have found. They are beautiful fish, and I will be so disappointed in myself if I don't get it right.
