Is a black splotch on the dorsal fin a sure fire sign of a female?

Its a "good" sign don't know if its considered a "sure" sign, especially when they are young.

Ime only of the blotch is permanent can you consider it a female. If it fades in and out of the dorsal then no, most likely a male.

It's easy to confuse the black blotch covering the dorsal fin with extenstion of of the black bar underneath the fin. So the pic in Post #3 is no sign of a female. The black blotch has to cover the dorsal fin to be a sure sign of a female. Additional clue is that the female has black ventral fins.

Spawning readiness, mood, and dominance also factor into the way color appears.
Here are some photos of a mature female(s) to show how they differ, so patience may be a necessary evil.
