hello everyone!

My pair must've spawned a few days ago as i noticed wigglers in their cave. They are in a 150 with a Venezuela Pike and a small trio of blue convicts.

The male festae is about 7 inches with the female about 5.5 inches or so. This is their first spawn.

The tank is decorated with tons of lace rock hiding places. Its the tank in my avatar.

Now onto the questions:

- I put the Venezuela pike and the convicts in their as target fish since the male likes to pick on the female sometimes. I wanted them to strengthen the pair bond; which they did. Now that they spawned, i want to remove the pike but doing so would require that i tear the whole tank apart to catch him which I'm afraid will upset the pair. What should i do?

- I've read that the males like to go beserk on the female about a month into the spawn as the fry start getting bigger. If this happens, do you think my female would be ok in the 150 with all those hiding places?

- I don't have a separate fry tank so i'm assuming the fry will get picked out one by one by the pike and the convicts. If this happens, what are the odds that my pair will blame eachother and go crazy on one another?

Please offer any additional tips that you can.

BTW, the male and female aren't particularly aggressive in protecting their nest. THe male runs when i come up to the tank and the female; instead of flaring, just hides in her cave. My convicts put up a bigger fight than that. Maybe they are just inexperienced?

Odds are with the other fish in the tank the fry will all get picked off. If you wish to breed these you would be better off to set up a fry tank.
If that's not possible, then maybe you could let nature take its course with this batch then it would give you time to put a plan together for the next time.
As far as the parents blaming each other, I don't think you really have to worry about that.
With my pair they go through cycles where the male goes all crazy, I have a divider with slots just big enough for the female to pass. But they are alone in a 220.

Thanks Big G.

I don't have the divider in place since i dont want to ruin the aesthetics of the tank as its one of my displays. I have enough caves in there at the moment for her to hide in as i heavliy scape all my tanks. I'm hoping she can get enough relief in the tank.
