well finally i told my buddy to bring over the Female Festae he had for sale. after acclimating and dividing the tank for 4hrs to let her calm down i let her have the range of the tank with my JD and Jag.

and the story goes.....

while divided the Festae was flaring and splashing at my JD....who by the way didnt seem to care that much....only flared at her a couple times and went about his way. and of course my lil Jag had something to say unless the Festae flared back and then he just scampered away. my buddy was worried about taking the divider out because the Festae had beat up his red devil that was 2inches bigger....and thought my JD would get hurt and the Jag would get killed

when the divider was removed the Festae went straight for my JD...and everyone knows JDs arent that tough....well mine is a SUPER JACK :headbang2 !!!! he locked up with her and slammed her around like a shark with a minnow! i couldnt believe it. the festae isnt alot bigger but she is bigger and thicker than my JD. after about 1hr of fighting the Festae finally took refugee in the plants. but that didnt stop JD....he would let her go!

i couldnt bare to watch...i took her out and gave her back to my buddy. i am saddened by this.

i think im going to get a GT that is a couple inches smaller than my JD that way he isnt intimidated. good idea?

How big are the JD and Jag? Its pretty frustrating when wanting to add new inhabitants to a tank which is already home to other aggressive fish. If the JD and Jag already have a fair size you may have some difficulty. I've heard of some people taking the current inhabitants out into another tank or plastic tub for a few hours and rearrange the tank adding first the new fish then adding the others...can't say if they were successful or not as there was no follow up...good luck

yeah i know what you mean....thats why i did the divider for a while. to let them calm down without contact. it didnt work maybe i will try removal and rearranging next time.

I had a young JD bout 3.5" an he wouldnt live with any thing i had to giv it up!

I was given some advice from a friend about adding new fish and I must say I haven't had a problem yet (cross fingers)
basically
rearrange the decor, this way noone has ownership of a peticular spot anymore.
FEED, and shut off the lights for the night.
Add the fish while the light is off and the fish are feeding.
This way they are so screwed up from the rearrangement and the feeding that they wont even notice the newby till its to late.
Also this way they ae not fighting over current territory because you moved it!

bigg081, do u want u ur jd to die? who says jd's aren't tough? they are, I've seen a jd kick a jags ass, n they were both about 9". jd's are great fish, yea, they have been around a while, but they are kick ass. Afterall Jack Dempseys are named that, because of the boxer from the 20's, c'mon of course they r tough. How big was the festae n dempsey and what size tank was it? I personally think dividers are dumb, unless the tank is small.

The last JD I had thought he was bad, beat up a loisellei and a managuense, dominated a same size texas. However, while working his way up the pecking order in my tank, he started going at the male salvini. Guess the sal got tired of him one night because in the morning he was missing his entire tail and there was a monstrous wound open on his flanks :( Fungus set in later in the day and I couldn't save him. A shame really, one of the best coloured dempseys I've ever seen.
