I am certainly no expert on this. I had never noticed the spot just below the dorsal either in the past in photos of festae. The female often gets a black blotch on the dorsal fin and this can help when trying to determine sex, but the black spot you are talking about is just below this. I have two different batches of festae growing out. Some from Peru and some from Ecuador. I know some of these fish have the black spot you are talking about, but not sure if all of them do. At first I was concerned as I had never noticed this before either. I will have to look tomorrow at feeding time and see if I can notice one vs. the other. It would be good if the festae experts on here would chime in with their knowledge of this.

OK - I just was watching my two groups of Festae and both groups have the spot but not all the time. As Jc1119 shared, it is part of the bars and comes and goes with mood. Some of mine have it and some don't - this is the same between both groups and I am pretty certain the one group is all brother & sister. The ones I bought as wild Peruvians have it on both male and female at times.

In the end, I would not be too worried about it - just part of the dozens of color patterns these fish show based on their mood.
