I saw for the first time a birchir other then a senegal at a lfs today. It was a Ornate and these are my favorite of the less rare polyps.

He was about 3-4" eyeing his length, and was $40. Is that a reasonable price for a small ornate?

Second the same lfs has a few small IT dats that i have never seen and i want to also get them. How are ornates with dats? They are not in the same tanks but the ornate is in with a small RTC and a black ghost knife so if he was a fin nipper i doubt hed be in with a BGK.

Third how long would it take this little guy to outgrow a 125g tank?

And finally what is a sufficent diet for a ornate? Im guessing as of now at the LFS he is eating only feeders, are they tough to get off feeders?

Any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance

That price is a little high for the size but depending on how rare they are in your area, you might not have a choice. As for keeping an ornate at that size with indo Dats, it shouldn't be a problem unless the dats are less than an inch long. The 125 will last you at least a year depending on if you power feed your fish and their growth rate (it varies from specimen to specimen). I would feed them cut up market prawns, cut up fish, blackworms, earth worms and pellets. Small dats shouldn't give you a hard time getting off feeders and since the ornate is most likely captive breed then it should readily eat any thing you offer it.

Hi Franchise

I have an ornate bichir (see the avatar ?) and he grows really fast. I cant say if the price is right but I have payed more than 40 dollars here in Brazil. I am searching a siamese tiger too. Those fishes are predators but not agressive, so u just have to watch if the tankmate fits in the other s mouth ... if not, they can get along just fine.

My current tank is a 63 gal. but the next one (coming soon) will be a 122 gal. tank. My ornate eats pellets and some fresh meat like chicken heart.

best regards !

Yeah they wont fit in his mouth so im not worried about that. I am more worried about fin nipping and stuff of that nature

the RTC will outgrow the rest, n your tank too so very soon.

The rtc is at the lfs, i dont have it, and i know it would thats why i didnt ask about it. If i needed to know about the rtc i would of asked in the catfish section...please answer the questions i asked rather then answering questions that i already know

1.The price isn't reasonable in my area. If you don't see them in your area often, then get it.
2.Ornates are fine with datnoids as long as it isn't small enough to be eaten.
3.What is the dimension on the 125g?
4.Sinking pellets,Tilapia and etc. Feeder is easy to get off.

thanks for the info hao, and the 125 is 6ftx18inx2ft i believe, i havnt purchased one yet, trying to find a cheap on in my area

I would have to say around 1-2 year until the Ornate would hit 18" just depends on other factors. ;)
