Few pics from the zoo

Over the years Ive herd allot of good comments about that zoo...now I see they are true :) One of the things that buggs me most (besides bad husbandry) is seeing a overuse of fake plants in animal enclosures, now that is how they should be done.

It can be tough with live plants, you end up with lots of the same types of low light loving plants that thrive or you have to do some rotation when they start deteriorating but it is definately worth it. To be honest of all the zoos and wildlife parks I've been to in this country, displays always used live plants (not that I've been to them all).

Chester is definately one of the good zoos and is certainly one of the larger ones over here. My only gripe is that they look to be going the 'modern' way of ordering the collection by keeping animals from the same "region" in the same areas. I prefer a more traditional, heres your herp house you know where they all were. An example would be having a random gaboon viper exhibit in the okapi/giraffe house. Just made it hard for me to find the animals I'm interested in, and I cant be sure I didn't miss something I would have wanted to see. But yeah, the displays were nice... they look to be very into their rhinos and hornbills in a big way.

Oh and sorry for no turtle pics cuora, they had some trifasciata and some FRTs... that's all I spotted on display.

great pics... i love those lizards in pics in their own habitat type environment... thanks Davo

do you think i should go this thursday?
Yeah definately, its a good day out. The aquarium is a little lack luster but the displays are neat and they do well with what they do have, no monsters except some jullieni barbs and an asian aro in the elephant house. Herps are everywhere, majority in the realm of red ape and the tropical house, but also some in the elephant, jaguar and giraffe/okapi housing area. Oh and the komodos and 3 sp of island iguana are in their own area.
What are you interested in?

Yeah, its the same one in the two pics, but he was quite a looker actually.

I shall have to visit it again, only been once and it was quite a few years back. Just been to Edinburgh zoo yesterday myself, but a lot of the animals were in their heated hides because of the cold weather. Unfortunately Edinburgh Zoo hasn't rebuilt their reptile house yet, but there are some great exhibits for the larger animals.

Great pictures anyway,
Paul
