Your suppose to raise the temp after putting the medicine in to treat ich but what if your fish are suppose to live in colder waters. I think 85 degrees will be too much for them to handle so right now it's at 65 degrees. Will the ich medicine be effective?

Also your suppose to take out the carbon in your filters right? Well I'm using Mardel Maracide and they tell you to keep normal filteration, as well as raising temp is NOT needed..... :screwy:

Ok so I guess I just turn off my Bio-wheel filter and kept the Penguin sponge filter on to be safer, well question is will the sponge filter also kill all the medicine i've just put in.

So what's everyone's take on this???

Should I just put my fish in a quaratine bucket and raise my temp up and treat the water, then put the fish back in. I hope I don't have to do this though.

Bumping up the temp is good because it makes the disrupts the ichs life cycle.
This is good for tropical fish since they can handle temps up to the high 80s.

But obviously with cooler water fish, this would not be a great idea. So just use ich meds and some salt and be sure to remove any carbon in your filter. Ich is one of the easiest fish malady to treat so just be patient and follow the meds intructions.

I have a bio-wheel filter and I've turned it off already so the carbon in the filter won't kill the medicine. So would a sponge filter do anything to the medicine, if yes then I guess I'll go a couple of days without any filteration at all.

First- Don't turn off the filter!!!! Just take out the carbon, by turning it off you are killing the bacteria that live in there. You need that bacteria to keep ammonia and nitrite down.

Second- What kind of natives do you have. Despite what many think, a lot of native can handle warm water, at least for a short time. Fish like sunfish and bullhead would do fine with a higher temp but some would not. Need to know what you have.

Thired- You don't need ich medication, in fact...I hate the stuff because salt works just as well (if not better) and is less dangerious. If you have scaleless fish you cannot use salt however.

Sand tiger is right, the biowheel doesn't have the charcoal in it just the carbon pack does. don't turn of the filter or any areators you have going. The colder water slows down the ich's life cycle and ich is only vulnerable in the mobile portion of the cycle, instead of traeing for 10-14 days you need to treat 21-30 days, you will need to do a partial water change during that time so if you replace 20g of water add enough more med for the water you replace, gravel vacing at tyhat time will also remove some spore capsuls but be sure to disinfect the siphon afterwards.

oh ok gotcha, I'll turn the bio-wheel filter back on but take the carbon out....duh.. :grinno:

BTW I have a two black crappies but they both died. I got one large mouth bass and he's not doing too well right now but seem a little better today then yesterday. I also got two walleyes, they are my diamonds in my tank. Walleyes are not suitable for warm weather that's why I'm so hesitant on raising the water temp. They are not very active fish anywasy but it seems like they are not as sick as the bass.

If my fish survives for 2 more weeks then I'm going to go and buy some more fish. Need to get like 8 fish or so but I'm hesitant because of the health of my three fish left.

oh and about the salt, is it ok now to add the salt if i already got some medication in the water???

Well after 2 days my fish seems to be acting better, well my Large mouth bass anyways. My two walleyes are always at the bottom just chillin. I'm suppose to treat the water on the 1, 3, and 5th day. I got one question, do these medicine make the fish react like cold medicine to us, drowsy or something like that. It just seems like the chemicals are making the fish tired at first.

I don't know about meds and salt, I think it depends on the meds, some contain a slime coat enhancer whish would just cause foam on the surface of salted water if you run an areator, Some meds lower O2 levels and that could make you fish lethargic, gool luck.

Well the Mardel Maracide seems to be working, already the bass is swimming better now and I don't see the ich on his tail. The walleyes however seems to have less movement with the medicine in the water, maybe it's affecting them too much. Fish will be fine now so I'll go and buy more fish this weekend.
