Hi folks joined up here awhile ago and have some Q's about planted tanks!
Can a plant that is used to cold water be used in a tropical tank?
And could an aquatic plant that's found outside be used in a planted tank? how would I go about cleaning it without damaging the plant?
Cheers!

yes. yes. wash it in what and i would qt.

ok now for the long answer most plants temps doesnt effect them unless it gets too hot. where do you think aquatic plants come from? most plants we use we force them to stay under water. in nature they would be bog or only water parts of the year. though not every plant you can take toss under water and it will grow. by getting plants from the wild you could be bringing a whole mess of trouble into your tank from bugs to nother problems. i personally would qt anything first a month. in the end its more likely quicker and cheaper long term to just pick up a few plants at the lfs.

Hello; Having tried to keep outside plants under artifical light, I recall that the few attempts made did not go too well. I did quarantine the collected plants. The plants collected from the wild did not do well and slowly died away. I suspected several things but at the time was not able to check the various possibilities out.
My strongest suspicion was that the change from natural sunlight to artifical light was a problem. this also seems to be an issue taking plants grown under artifical light to full sunlight. I have considered some method of making the transition from natural light to full artifical light over time, but never got around to it.
