Alright so a few months ago I fell inlove with sand aquariums and I decided to use sand in my tanks. I recently setup a new tank to house my redtail for a few months and I put so little sand if he swims you see glass. My question is it pointless to even use little sand? I clean the poop off the top of the sand every day. My other biggest peave is my filters are extremely noisey (cleaned the sand for about a hour ) because of it is there a sand that looks like play sand but a bit larger? IV heard of pool sand by never seen it used. Any one have any opinions? I honeslty would like to use black sans I think iT would look rather nice in a redtail tank but I I don't like "aqarium' sand it seems to fine

Never used pool sand but i hear its pretty highly recommended.

It's not the end of the world to siphon sand out of a tank and replace it if you don't like it - i've tried black sand, damn expensive and makes everything look dark.

Yeah I'm not worried about siphoning it I just don't like the mess it makes of filters. I really like black sand but like you said its expensive! I guess I'm gonna pickup a bag of pool sand and try it.

Play sand is just too easy to stir up because it is light. Pool/water filtration sand is much heavier, I have used it for years without a problem.
But to me it is an advantage that sand doesn't allow feces to work its way into the substrate and degrade, so the incentive for me to clean it out/vacuum(and thereby do a water change) everyday is a good thing for your fish.

I turned to sand because all you have to do is really vacuum the top of. Its much easyer to clean. I don't mind doing water changes. I actually have to. My tank is a bit over stocked for now. 2 channel cats 1 red tail catfish and 1 fire mouth tend to poop a lot.haha. Sand is just a all around awesome thing. 80% of the time poop and extra feed gets sucked up by the filter I had so many problems with gravel. Plus it looks more natural.

Pool filter sand it awesome it doesn't get into your filters it doesn't get all messed up to make your tank cloudy and it is a lot easier to clean the tanks when it is time for a water change

I have been using pool filter sand in my 120g for about 6 weeks now and the water is crystal clear.I am running a FX5 and a Fluval 305 and it's been good so far.

Agreed with the above about pool filter sand. I switched this past weekend. With zero washing I intentionally tried to stir it up. No dice! It settles right back down leaving only clear water! All I did then was a 100 percent flush to new water, added a seeded filter and then moved the fish over. The plecs and Cory's love it too!
