Alright so today i bought a second hand fluval 404. he had it running into a sink when i got there to show it working and it seemed almost silent .. could barellyy hear it even close (or as far as i remember it seemed to be) i got it home added media and set it up .. cycling it through now. didn't take his advice and pour water slowly into the (part that sucks up the water) to speed up the process of getting rid of the air in tubes. i just put it in and decided to wait. anyways its been like over half an hour now and it has gotten better but still doesnt seem as queit as it was earlier today. it is now just layed on my floor until tomorrow when i drill the holes in the back of the stand. so i havent gotten to hear what it will sound like yet with the stand door closed but dont think it will completely cover up the sound. My tanks are in my room and i would really like if i could find a way to make it pretty much silent so i was thinking about soundproofing the inside of the cabinet to make it pretty silent when i close the door however i have no idea how to go about doing this. anyone had to do this or just generally know how to soundproof things well?

Thanks,
Mitch

It should be pretty much silent when operating, no need for soundproofing...try this

thanks. i read the post. didnt try that way but it's still running free of air now and making a bit of noise. i will try this way soon however even if it doesn't make it quieter (being used possibly making difference) any other ideas on soundproofing just incase it doesnt help?

I set my canisters (Fluval 404 included) and air pumps on a cut up suction cup plastic bath mat and they are all silent. Try setting it on an old rubber bath mat it helps and everyone has one.

TC has a good method right there, but as for soundproofing the cabinet, remember, these pumps generate a non-trivial amount of heat when in an enclosed space. If you soundproof it, you're insulating it.

Isolation of the unit will help. A couple of mouse pads under it should help a lot. If that doesn't work, then the stand ( and tank ) may be resonating. Put your hand on the stand. If you feel vibration then you'll need to see if you can stiffen the sides of the stand, or add mass. If you want to go all out, check out the car stereo places. They've got the rubber ( I'd skip the asphalt ) pads/tiles you can stick to the inside walls of the stand.

the stand isn't the problem .. it's not the vibration. its the actual power head making a sound .. when layed on my carpet it is still making the sound .. like i can hear the motor running. perhaps ill try the new way of setting it up and see what that does

It's a 404, you may need to break it down and look for some junk that got jarred loose in shipping from the pickup to your house. Reseating the impellar and listening for wear wouldn't be a bad idea seeing as it's second hand.
