I'm debating a few fish to stock in a 55g...I've really taken a liking to FH's, but never experienced a full grown one. I know they have a rap of killing tankmates..does this include fish like dithers and plecos? I have a 136b pleco I'd rather not lose, and will probably have silver dollars in there as well. I may end up with something else, but I'm curious. What about a green texas? Would that work?

It depends on the temperment/tolerance of your fh. Some are able to tolerate tankmates while others just kill them. your best chance is with the pleco, since it wont really occupy the same swimming area as your fh. But i would still keep an eye on ur pleco is you plan to do so.

FH get really aggressive as they mature. They will probably pick on the dithers. I would skip the silver dollars personally, they get massive and will outgrow your 55 gallon with your FH in it and FH gets to 14". Personally I would just have the FH and the pleco in the 55 gallon tank. You really don't want to overstock if you want a really nice healthy looking FH. And as the FH gets bigger it will most likely pick on the silver dollars.

They need a tank bigger than 12 inches wide,so a 75 would be best. There is no reason to keep dithers with one, they are very active fish, always at the front of the tank. You might be able to keep a pleco with one,but considering how messy FH are,and plecos too,I would not bother. A single FH in a 75 is all you need.

My FH has killed EVERY single fish I have tried to put in with her so I have given up. I tried a goup of convicts as ditherers and she seamed quite happy with them until the lights went out in the morning I had 4 half convicts and 1 whole one hiding behind the filter intake tube. I grew her out in a community tank thinking it would socialize her but as she got bigger she started wiping out the natives, she even turned on the Firemouth that she was best buds with.

I currently have a FH and Pleco in a 47 gallon. The FH is about 2.5" and the Pleco is about 3.5". I introduced both of them into the tank the same day and the FH doesn't seem to care about it. The FH will suddenly stop and look at the Pleco when it moves/swims away, but other than that, it just goes about it's own way. I've just made sure that the Pleco has plenty of hiding spots in the event the FH decides to make a meal of it.

If you keep them together when they are still small, chances are they will live in harmony..
Btw, if you like flowerhorns, I suggest you keep 2 fh with a divider in place..
But since you already have that pleco, just get a baby fh & grow it out.. They will be fine..

if you start small, it may work. the only luck i have kept with flowerhorn are blood parrots.

A pleco is the only fish I can keep w/ my flowerhorn when they breed... they get picked on a lil but they got the armor scales

I keep a BP with my FH and they get along great but he's just a baby, only time will tell if I have to split them up. But so far so good.
