ok so one guy is selling me a 40g tank 36 x 17 x 14 for a cheap price. however i heard that a fh cant live in thereforever. wat if it was a male or a female? also how long would it last in that tank with an emperor 400?
If that 17" is wide then it could work for a long time. Only thing that sucks about that tank is it would only be 14" tall. If you have a male you'll want to keep the water level low to keep him from injuring his head. So that means you won't be filling it up all 14" if you have a male, cutting even less off the available height. I still prefer a 75g which would be a foot longer. The emporer would be fine.
Obviously if you have a female you could keep it in that tank longer as it shouldn't get quite as big as a male.
All that being said if you have a male I would only do the 40g if it was an absolute deal. Otherwise I'd almost rather see you hold out for a larger tank unless he's too the point where he absolutely needs moved now. For a female it would be fine.
I love the 40 breeder i have 4 of them and they measure 36x16x18 and a fish will get much bigger in that than a 55 which measures 48x21x12.That 18'' front to back is sweet. If your looking at a average full grown male around 11 to 12 '' no problem but in 55 12'' fish cant turn around hardly.
As far as a female you could keep three in one divided 40 breeder for there hole life because you dont want then more than 4 to 5'' tops so tey are to small to kill your male.Hope this helps
I agree with bud. It's all about the footprint, and I love my 60 and 50 breeders over my 55s. 40 isn't ideal, but that fish would last over a year before it would be pressing to get him a bigger tank.
