I think like all the other fishs, it gonna depend on tank size, food given and water quality.

mine hit a foot after the first year

fast enough for ya?

now he's almost 14 inches and two years old (though i bought him in late august at 3'' so im assuming he was born late june early july)

yeah same here have a fish that size seeing if they would grow fast

I am sure if he sees the gulper, he will grow twice as fast

But seriously - they do grow quick - a foot in a year is reasonable. Just feed him a lot of pellets.

agreed...all my males did,depends on the gender...none of my females have hit a foot yet.
