hi all,
ive found advice online about pouring the resin instead of painting it on to seal the tank. Its supposed to be self leveling and very strong?
has anyone used this method?
if so how many gallons do you think ill need for 48 square feet, im assuming it'll use more than if i painted it on.
cheers paul

so no ones used the pour method with epoxy then?

I have used the pour-on epoxies but never in a fiberglass reinforced tank.

If it were just bare plywood you could probably get away with a gallon and you used something else for your flood coat. But it takes some experience to get it that thin and if you're using fiberglass reinforcement you'll definately need more than a gallon.

If it were me I'd plan on at least two gallons. And if I needed fiberglass I would use cloth or roving and no mat as it won't wet out with the thicker epoxy.

I only recall seeing one pour on epoxy product that said it was okay for use with fiberglass. I can't remember which one it was.

If you want to try this I would stick with the pour on types with a 2:1 mixing ratio. The 1:1 ratio pourable epoxies have fillers added which is probably not ideal for fish tanks.

thanks for the reply, im going to use general purpose fibreglass resin( with cloth) and them some other product to finish. i can get 10kg of the resin for £40 which according to the instructions should cover my tank(4.5 s/meters) twice.
do you think this, along with the cloth and potable paint finish will be enough?
thanks again

ps. i think ill just use a roller instead of pouring as im a total newbie with the fg.

Yeah, use a polyester resin specific roller if this is your first try at this. Get a squeegee for the corners as well.

How far your resin will go really depends on volume of material and the weight and type of reinforcement you use. You can find formulas for this online.

I see you're buying the resin by weight and not by volume so I can't say for sure if it will be enough. Polyester is sometimes sold by weight since that's how many calculate how to wet out X amount of weight of cloth, roving or mat.

If you're using an additional topcoat I'm sure you'll be fine. Make sure to watch a lot of videos of how to apply fiberglass and polyester.

thanks for great advice...
ive watched and read so much on fibreglassing my head hurts lol
two more questions if u dont mind...
are the fumes really bad?
