I came across a fibreglass tank a few weeks ago and thought i could turn it into a tank like the ones sold here:
http://www.aquaticeco.com/customers/subcategories/945/Fiberglass-Tanks-With-Window

The tank in the pic i added is 8X4X3. The room i want to put it in only has a 30" doorway. so i was thinking of cutting it down to 26-28" tall to fit threw.

My question is this, if i were to cut it shorter, and cut out a viewing area and install a piece of glass, would this work? or would i need to brace it more?

What i had planned was to use 10mm glass, but i could also use 12mm if needed. Water heigth will be 21", as i plan to leave a 3" lip all around the bottom and sides and have the actual viewing are of 90X18" then i would only fill to the top of the glass.

any thoughts?

Yes you would need to brace it alot more is you cut it down and put in a view panel. You would be cutting off that top brace to make it fit through the door so that would have to be replaced at the new height. It would also need bracing around the viewing window. Depending on your skill level it may be easier to install a bigger door.

I was thinking the same thing.Cutting that top rib off is going to detract alot from the structure.I wouldnt cut the ribs at all.If you cut it down to the middle rib,how tall is it?
I would cut out a view window between the center and upper rib.Be cool seeng the fish come up from the "bottom".

I think the middle rib is at the halfway mark, so maybe 18inches up. I guess i could cut the tank right above the middle rib, and cut the viewing window out right below that rib. Then the middle rib would act as the brace? would that work? I dont know the exact measurements, these are just pics i was sent. i should add, that stocking is going to be stingrays, so i would like to be able to see the bottom, but i will also add an arowana, so some heigth would help.
