have any of you kept these in fresh water for any length of time

Yeah, a long time ago I had 3 of them for a couple of years. I believe it was a 10 gallon with a couple inches of water in it and a slope of sand that came out of the water. There were a few rocks for them to climbe up on too. I kept a heater in the water that kept it in the mid 70's and thats about it. I fed the fish flakes and dired krill. I was a kid so it probabley wasn't the best set up but it worked.

I do believe it needs to be brackish. I heard somewhere that the salt helps with their shell.

i've kept them with my african cichlids at 20% salt. they were very interesting. til the climbed out.

My younger brother has 2 in a 20 gallon. It is filled with brackish water, a large rock, and then a sandy slope which comes out of the water. He runs aa 40w heater and a small filter. They are pretty cool little crabs.
