I have a couple of black mission fig trees in the backyard. Still small maybe 4' tall but I take very good care of them and the soil down the shore makes for very sweet fruit (I have 6 wineries within 8 miles of my house). They are so good in fact that a couple of relatives asked for saplings from my little trees. I only get about 80 figs from each tree in a year so I don't want to take too much off, or take some off and have it fail. Just wondering if anyone has a sure fire way of propagation. Thanks in advance.

When I was a kid I was feed figs every day. I love them, every Italian family had a fig tree in the yard. The old timers would dry the figs, then take the seeds and plant about 2" in moist petemoss in the spring once it sprouted they would grow it in a big pot for about two months then plant it. The young trees grew fast about a foot a year. or another way is, in the early spring before the tree starts growing, cut about an 8" shoot off the tree that has buds on it, plant this in a shady area in a sandy lome with good drainage. Once the cuttings start to produce leaves, plant them up to the bottom leaf you can start them in a big outdoor pot or plant it where you want. Then just wate about 6 years and before you know it you'll have figs.

+1 aquanero! Being sicilian ive seen fig trees around since i could remember. My father just gave me a shoot a year ago only 3" tall and its almost 2ft now. He starts new plants every year from the shoots and theres atleast a dozen family members with them now. O.P. all you need is a tiny shoot with maybe 3 leaves, cut it off and plant it and ur good to go. Most all of them take. I laughed when i saw how small the shoot my father gave me and its doing great. I feel quite privledged to have part of a tree thats older than me (27)
I started mine in peatmoss/dirt/compost mix then transferred it to hydroton clay pebbles in a pot. It really likes fish water :)

Heres my close to year old "cutting" from a larger tree. uploadfromtaptalk1368497540652.jpguploadfromtaptalk1368497556994.jpg still debating to move it into the rest of the aquaponic system. Grew alot larger than my fathers cuttings from last year he put in dirt as opposed to hydroton.
