I would like to get a figure 8 puffer for my brackish tank but ive heard they've got nasty tempers. i saw them at my lfs the other day and they were with a bunch of tetras and other fish and the puffer seemed to itolerate them just fine. is it possible to keep them with any other fish at all, or was it just a lethargic fish? right now i just have a 5-6" dragon goby in a 20 gal at roughly 1.005 sg. i was originally going to add some mollies in with the goby, but id think a puffer would be much more interesting, but i do not want it to pick on my dg. is it a good investment or should i fish for bumblebees instead?

I'm not familiar with the temperament of any specific puffer species, but you'd probably be taking a risk.
I would go with the bumblebees. They're good tankmates for violet gobies. They're so small that they probably don't even add that much to the bioload.
Are you prepared to upgrade soon? Violet gobies grow big fast if you take good care of them. It might be 12" within a year.

yeah i have like a 55 tall and some mangroves in a fresh water tank at the moment and i was thinking in turning it into some cool setup or something. it's just hard because i wont be having a lot of free time when i start college.

I wouldn't add puffers in there now. If you have a spare tank, then make it for puffers, but I wouldn't risk the rest of the fish for an otherwise boring puffer

Eventually even a 55 gal can be outgrown by a violet goby. They are very eel-like, so up to 12" one would probably be alright in a 55. However, a larger tank would be much better. It would provide more space, and having less time wouldn't be as detrimental, because the bioload would be proportionally smaller than it would have been in a smaller tank.

f8s are fairly peaceful, in order of aggression i'd go dwarf puffers, F8s and green spotted, the green spots i've seen are vicious while f8s are pretty mellow(never seen an aggressive one) but i would be a bit cautious while i've seen my dwarf puffers get pushed around by endlers.

Aren't dwarf puffers freshwater?
Besides, I know somebody who had 8 puffers in a 15-20 gal tank, and the last time I checked, the two strongest had killed all the others. I wouldn't be surprised if there was one left now.
I would think it's best to simply not take the risk at all, with any species of puffer.
