I'm going to be upgrading to a 125 gallon in the near future with two severums (red spotted and notatus), an EBJD, and 6 geophagus red head tapajos. Would a school of filament barbs fill out this tank nicely? How many could comfortably fit in a tank this size without it being overstocked? I saw some at the LFS and thought they would look awesome as a schooling fish in this tank but I wasn't sure how big they get. Do you guys think this could work? Anyone have experience with these fish?

G'day.

Filament Barbs get about 12cm, 15cm in rare cases. Usually barbs work in schools, and these types are no different. A school of 6 will do awesome. However I am a purist, so I would do a South American Tetra species, one that wouldn't get eaten, like penguin tetras, or red eyed tetras, ot even a smaller headstander like Pseudanos sp.

I used to have a school of six and they're awesome fish. I would recommend them to anyone. They are very quick and lively fish that almost never stop moving. When they mate it's really cool the way they swim around and around in little circles a mile a minute. I'm down to only two now, unfortunately they've been killed off my cichlids over time, but are very fast and hard to catch. I've had my male and female for about 5 years now. The male is 5.5" and the female is about 5", maybe a smidge less.

personally, i think they will work fine, since i don't think your cichlids will have much issues with them
