Hello Everyone! I have had a busy weekend setting up my 125g. I got it all filled up and let my sand settle, then I started my filter it is a Tom Aquarium RP3 Plus. I don't think anyone else uses one on here but if anyone does or if anyone can help me the return pump is rated at 700gph. When I put my hand in front of the return line the flow feels pretty weak to me. I am just wondering if I am paranoid I don't have enough flow or what but I think 700gph out of a 3/4" tube should be about 11.5 gallons a minute and it doesn't seem like it. Can someone give me an idea how much water flow I should have is there a way to check it beside just sticking my hand in front of it and feeling?? Thanks so much. This site has answered all my questions I have had and then some. Very informative post and people!

umm take a picture, maybe ur tubing is to long for the intake and out take, and the stuff you put inside the filter blocks water flow, if ur using fine filter pads it will clog up easily and block up flow. id suggest u show me a picture

What is your filter filled with? I know when I first started using canisters I had a habit of overfilling them with media and would lower the flow rate. More media isn't always better if you're clogging up your flow.

Check for sags or dips in your hoses as they will contribute to problems.

If you want to check your flow, you will need a measured container and a watch/clock to time how long it takes to fill your container. Then do the math for whatever measured amount of water you collected from the output nozzle.

^^What??? You can't kink any hose for filters or pumps and expect them to work properly.

I am having problems with the fx5 hose
Not sure why I was told you can't kink it

FX5 tubing is just like a garden hose, if it has a kink or kinks in it then it is going to drastically reduce the flow of water or stop it. You should unkink the tubing and if there are any loops or excess slack, I would cut the tubing. I recommend you watch the DVD that comes with the FX5. There is some useful information. Good luck

I will try and get some pictures of my filter. It is a store bought one that came with all the media it has 3 filter pads then bio balls then a carbon pillow and last the water flows through a bunch of little rings. I cut the hoses so the were as straight as possible maybe I am just paranoid. I guys when I had an old style power head it produced a lot of water and I guess this is completely different.
